About Us

After Richard J. Stone fathers death in 1967, he returned to his second year of law school with some of the odds and ends his mother had given him, things which she had gathered to occupy her time while Richard and his two brothers were off attending prep school and college. Richard’s purpose of taking these odds and ends was to try to sell them to earn some extra money while attending law school.  Richard soon made the acquaintance of Mr. Robert Church, proprietor of Church Company, a prestigious Boston jewelry firm specializing in antique jewelry. Mr. Church offered him a part-time job which he quickly accepted. Before meeting Mr. Church what Richard knew about antique jewelry you could fit in a thimble and still have room left for the Grand Canyon. It was under Mr. Church tutelage that he learned the basics in evaluating precious metals and gemstones.

After passing the Massachusetts bar in March of 1970, Richard was confronted with the dilemma of joining his uncle's law practice or opting to start his own business of buying and selling antique and vintage jewelry. he chose the latter. In September of 1970, The Family Jewels opened its doors across the street from Smith College, one of the worlds most prestigious women's institutions of higher learning. Spring boarding from the education he had gotten from Mr., Church, Richard became a self taught expert in diamonds, gemstones, precious metals, fine pieces of period jewelry and  most importantly antique jewelry restoration.

Despite Richard’s success in a small community, he ventured forth into the world of national and international trade shows. Our clientele since has blossomed worldwide to the far markets of India, Japan, China and Europe, that are now a staple in our business.

When Richard is asked about the most important aspects of his business, he replies with "acquisition of merchandise is the most important part of it". We are always interested in purchasing  all sorts of jewelry especially important pieces of jewelry. Everything from the most modest pieces of costume jewelry to the most opulent of jewels. I am also very actively purchasing sterling silver knives, forks and spoons, sterling silver dishes; gold, silver and copper coins.

At our office, located at 56 Green Street Northampton, Ma, clients are attended to by Richard and his staff, who are regarded by our clients as extremely knowledgable, skilled and courteous. When asked for the secret of his success, Richard answers without hesitation; "I have been at the same location, 56 Green Street Northampton Ma, for the past 47 years and have succeeded because we are known for our competence, skills and  integrity. Our long list of national and international clients know that they can trust us and return to us to purchase or sell to us time and time again".
